Therapy for Adults

We are a collection of stories, memories, and events…things that have happened to us, what we’ve done, things we remember and those we don’t. Even things passed down to us from relatives and generations before. It can feel maddening to want things to be different but to feel unable to actually make things different. With cultural sensitivity and utmost respect for your story and experience, we can work together to find ways to lessen the pain and feel release.

Focus Areas:

  • Trauma, PTSD, Childhood Abuse

  • Anxiety, Depression, and Stress

  • Feeling overwhelmed with roles - parent, spouse, caregiving

Therapy for Teens

Being a teen in today’s world can be a lot, and it may sometimes feel like no one understands you. I’ve worked with teens for years, and I know that it can be hard to trust an adult enough to open up and share honestly. Our work will be confidential, and I may gently inquire or push, but you are always in the driver’s seat of your therapy.

Focus Areas:

  • Identity issues, particularly around race

  • Anxiety, Depression, Anger and Stress

  • Relationship issues with peers or parents, including divorced or absent parents

  • Trauma and Abuse

  • Feeling lost or without direction or purpose

  • Self-Esteem, Confidence

 Brainspotting

“Where you look affects how you feel.” Brainspotting is a powerful brain-body therapy that helps clients feel almost immediate relief or lessening of symptoms and uncomfortable feelings of distress. We understand now that trauma and emotionally painful events can be stored in our brains and bodies, often even before we have actual memories. These stored events can cause us to be reactive and “triggered” by things that no longer are harmful for us. Brain-body therapies, such as Brainspotting and EMDR, allow people to heal and create new, healthy and adaptive memory networks, releasing the hold the trauma had on us. Research has proven these modalities to be effective and show that healing takes place more quickly with these therapies than with traditional “talk” therapy.

During a Brainspotting session, your therapist will help guide you to a Brainspot, somewhere in your visual field, either through physical sensations you feel, observations of the therapist, or natural places you gaze when talking. You will listen to biolateral sounds, which stimulates both sides of your brain simultaneously, while also accessing deep parts of your limbic brain, where these painful or traumatic memories are stored. Brainspotting is a very gentle, organic therapy, where you will feel the attunement of your therapist with you.

 EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is another body-brain based therapy with great healing potential. Traumatic and painful events from our past are stored in our brains and bodies, which may cause us to have symptoms in our daily lives. Brain-body therapies, such as Brainspotting and EMDR, allow people to heal and create new, healthy and adaptive memory networks, releasing the hold the trauma has on us. Research has proven these modalities to be effective and show that healing takes place more quickly with these therapies than with traditional “talk” therapy. (For more on research recognizing the effectiveness of these, modalities, click here for EMDR, and here for Brainspotting.)

You and your therapist will decide if EMDR is a good fit for you through assessment and an understanding of your history. An important part of EMDR includes preparation and building resources, so that clients are able to feel calm and regulate, both in sessions and in between sessions.
